Did you know that it is now recommended that individuals of all ages receive two dental appointments each year? The old recommendation of getting your teeth, gums and mouth examined and teeth professionally cleaned has been updated from once a year to every six months. This is because dental appointments scheduled twice a year are more effective at detecting early gun disease so that it can be treated in a timely manner before it impacts your oral health.
Dental Teeth Cleanings
Dental teeth cleanings are essential for good oral health. During your appointment, our dentist in Chandler, AZ will examine your mouth, teeth and gums for signs of cavities, abnormalities and signs of gum disease, like gingivitis and periodontal disease. We’ll also ask you if you’ve noticed any bleeding from your gums while you brush or floss your teeth because this is a sign of gingivitis. If we notice any cavities, they will be filled during your teeth cleaning appointment. If we notice signs of gum disease, we may need to perform a deep cleaning in order to remove all the plaque and tartar from your teeth, below the gum line and inside any pockets that have formed between your teeth and your gums. Deep cleanings may require multiple appointments.
How We Clean Your Teeth
The toothbrushes and floss you use at home is great for removing plaque, but if you’ve missed removing all the plaque on your teeth, it can harden into tartar, which cannot be removed with at-home oral hygiene products. Instead, it must be scraped from your teeth, using professional dental tools. For this reason, your dental cleaning will always start with the scraping of all the plaque and any tartar from your teeth and below the gum line. If you get regular dental cleanings, this won’t take very long.
However, if it’s been a while since your last cleaning, the process may take more time. After we finish scraping your teeth, you will be asked to rinse your mouth with water. Next, we will brush your teeth with an electric toothbrush and apply a gritty paste. This polishes your teeth and helps prevent food from sticking to them for a short amount of time.
At the end of your appointment, our dentist will be happy to answer all of your oral hygiene questions and/or questions about our additional services, like teeth whitening, veneers and clear braces so that you can get the smile you deserve.
