April 2016

Oral Cancer Awareness Month

April 20th from 10 am-2pm we will be offering free oral cancer screenings. This will be by appointment only.

According to the American Dental Association, nearly 42,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or throat cancer this year.  One American dies every hour from oral cancer.

In recognition of Oral Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. J. Philipp is available to discuss the warning signs and to demonstrate a simple test that helps spot cancer in the early stages.  The goal is to find abnormal cells in either their pre-cancerous form or stage 1 or stage 2 when treatment is relatively easy. Many cases are diagnosed in the later stages, which can make effective treatment more challenging.  Late stage treatment almost always results in disfiguring surgeries.

Oral Cancer Screening Demonstration (can be done at dentist office or in-studio)

  • Takes just 1-2 minutes
  • Special light highlights abnormal cells

The test can lead to detection much earlier than the following signs and symptoms, which often appear in later stages.  With these symptoms average survival rate is less than 5 years.

  • Sore or irritation that doesn’t go away
  • Red or white patches
  • Pain, tenderness or numbness in mouth or lips
  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking or moving your jaw or tongue
  • Change in the way your teeth fit together when you close mouth
