What to expect on your first visit

Upon arrival you be greeted by our Scheduling Coordinator. She will first have you sign the forms you filled out on our website and review your information as well as answer any questions that you may have. At this time feel free to enjoy a beverage from our assortment of coffees, teas, hot cocoas, or water in our refreshment station. In the lobby you will find a selection of magazines to enjoy, a dvd playing, and our beautiful fountain to entertain you during your brief wait for your Hygienist. You will soon be greeted by your Hygienist. She will consult with you about your oral health questions and concerns. Next we will take a set of digital x-rays and intra-oral photographs to access the health of your mouth. The next step of your visit will be the periodontal exam. During this time your Hygienist will check the health of your gums with a dental instrument used to measure the depth of the periodontal pocket. The Hygienist will call out a set of number. There will be six numbers for each tooth. The numbers we are looking for are 1’s, 2’s, and 3’s. We are also looking to make sure there is no bleeding or sensitivity. Numbers 4 and over as well as bleeding and sensitivity are an indicator there is infection and/or periodontal disease. When the Hygienist is finished you will meet with Dr. Philipp. He will review your x-rays, photos, and periodontal readings. He will then do a thorough examination of your teeth, gums and mouth to help identify any potential signs of disease or tooth decay. Our goal is to help you maintain good oral health and to identify potential problems before they become serious. After his exam, Dr. Philipp, will then explain to you his findings and if any treatment is needed he will then explain the recommended restorations or therapy. You are encouraged to ask him all of your questions so that you have full understanding of the next step in caring for oral health. After all of your questions have been answered, your Hygienist will clean your teeth. This will include the removal of any tartar, stain, and plaque present. This can involve the use of various instruments or devices to loosen and remove deposits from the teeth. Once your cleaning is complete the Hygienist will polish and floss the teeth. At the end of the appointment, if you would like, she will apply fluoride to the teeth to prevent them from future decay. The American Dental Association recommends this every six months for both children and adults. Aside from treatment, dental hygienists are also teachers – they are here to educate you on the proper way to care for your teeth and gums. They are always eager to answer all your questions and do anything to help you have your healthiest smile. On occasion a patient may be diagnosed with Periodontal Disease or Gum disease. If that is the case the Treatment Coordinator will schedule your periodontal therapy as it takes more time to provide this treatment than it does for a regular cleaning. Following your cleaning you will meet with our Treatment Coordinator. If Dr. Philipp diagnosed any treatment she will review your treatment plan with you in detail. She can also answer any additional questions you may have. At this time, you will also be quoted for any costs that may be associated with the recommended dental work. Before you are presented with your treatment our Insurance Coordinator will have verified insurance coverage and fee schedules for the most accurate estimate of fees. Our Office Manager can also help you make financial arrangements if needed. We offer both interest free and extended payment options for your convenience. Finally, you will be schedule for you next appointment and receive your goodie bag.
