Any form of dental operation that is explicitly intended to improve the aesthetics of the bite, gums, or teeth is categorized under the practice of cosmetic dentistry. A number of dentists explicitly self-identify as “cosmetic dentists” who are fully committed to meeting the needs of patients who simply want to regain the pearly luster in their smiles. Our practice is well known with a great reputation for our cosmetic dentist in Chandler, AZ Dr. J. Philipp.
The main cosmetic dental services generally requested by patients who inquire about cosmetic dentistry include gap closure, cavity filling, tooth reshaping, chip repair, crack covering, and a whitening bleach administration to teeth that have lost some of their brightness.
Nationwide cosmetic dentistry inquiry trends
In 2004, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) called upon Levin Group to carry out a nationwide survey in order to collect information about the growth and future of patient demand for cosmetic dentistry. The survey was formally referred to as The State of Cosmetic Dentistry.
In order to conduct the survey, Levin Group delivered a questionnaire with 26 question to dentists across the nation, both AACD-certified and non-members alike. The questions were specially designed to enlighten the researchers about trends in patient inquiries into cosmetic dentistry.
The results showed that adults between the ages of 31 and 40 years old, constituting 38% of all cosmetic dentistry inquiries, were the most likely demographic to express interest in learning more about possible cosmetic dentistry procedures.
Baby boomer patients between the ages of 41 and 50 (32%) were closely behind adult patients between the ages of 31 to 40 years old, followed by members of Generation X (14%) and senior citizens between the ages of 51 and 60 (12%) being the least likely to inquire.
The survey also demonstrated that females composed a significant majority of the patients that doctors reported to have inquired about cosmetic dentistry, collectively equaling up to 96% of all reports. The most popular cosmetic procedure to be requested by patients was whitening, so 25% of all cosmetic dentistry services performed happened to be for preventive purposes.
Interestingly, tooth whitening was the most commonly inquired-about procedure and yet one of the least-commonly conducted. The most frequently-occurring procedure was the placement of crowns and bridges, constituting nearly a quarter of all different types of procedures conducted. Behind crown and bridge placement were direct bonding procedures at 19%, on onlays-inlays at 7%, teeth whitening at 7%, and veneers at 4%.
